What happens to my health information when I ask the AI a question?
Your question, and your age and gender if you have set them, are sent to an AI model run by AWS Bedrock. In the symptom checker it also includes the conditions, medications, allergies, family history and surgeries on record for the person you selected; the signed-in dashboard chat can include their recorded conditions and medications. We do not send your name or date of birth, and we do not use your information to train AI models. Your question is sent as you type it, so please do not include names or other identifying details. selfMD gives general health information, not a diagnosis, and it is not for emergencies - call 911.
How does family privacy work? Can I manage my children's health privately?
Yes! On the Family plan you can manage up to 6 family members using nicknames like "Mom," "Dad," "Little One," or "Teenager" instead of real names. You can keep each person's health concerns, medications and medical history under their nickname. Anything you type in a question is sent as you type it, so leave out real names.

Is HIPAA applicable to SelfMD.ai? How secure is my health information?
SelfMD.ai is a consumer health app, not a doctor, hospital or insurer, so HIPAA does not apply to it and we do not claim HIPAA compliance. We are held to the FTC Act, the FTC Health Breach Notification Rule and state health-privacy laws, and our Privacy Policy explains how. Your health records are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM using a key per user, and all traffic is served over TLS. We hold no third-party compliance attestation. Questions? Email privacy@selfmd.ai.
